Sodom and the Phoenix by Ann Mayburn
4 out of 5 Paddles
Tanwen Evans is shocked to find her visit to Sodom Virtual Reality Resort coincides with their BDSM convention. She discovers the booking was deliberately planned by her friend and booking agent, to whom she had confided some secret fantasies during a drunken moment after her divorce. While standing in line to register, she meets Dom Bryan Hamilton, a mouthwatering hunk who attracts submissives like a magnet.
Bryan is strongly attracted to Tanwen, after years of grieving for his dead wife. He has never wanted a long term commitment since, but something about the lady with the Phoenix tattoo has him rethinking that stance. A long-standing member of the BDSM community, and friends with the resort owner, he pulls some strings and has himself inserted into Tanwen’s virtual reality experience. He then invites her to join him outside the virtual world, with interesting results.
The story made me want to know more about virtual reality. The sex scenes were very hot, and the plot held my interest. The story has a HFN ending and leaves the door open for a sequel-like why the resort owner’s sub is unhappy.
I felt left a little bit lost with the virtual reality scenes-it was a bit difficult to tell reality from fantasy and the reasoning behind the ménage sex was never explained. Even so, this was an exploration of a relatively new technology combined with a hot erotic romance.
