Sting Factor (kink): 4 out of 5

Dylan, Cole, and Brandon have a good life together. They’re all insufferably hot, their landscaping business is booming, and the sex is fantastic. Everything seems perfect until a secret from Dylan’s past comes back to literally haunt him – his brother’s vicious rape and murder. Alienated by his visions, tormented by past wrongs, convinced of his own guilt, he begins to fall apart, and it’s up to the other two to save him. If they can.

Maybe a mild trigger warning on this one; there’s no flashbacks, there’s only some brief discussion of what happened.

The sex here is hot. There are no whips and chains, no ropes and paddles, just rough sex and lots of it.  Lots of D/s with verbal domination, lots of delicious dirty talking. It’s very good. If you want something flashy with all the bells and whistles, this probably won’t give you what you’re looking for, but if you want hot sex that’s mostly of the “Go here, slave; do this, slut; and by the way, I own your ass” variety – and I am a huge fan of that – there’s plenty of that here. It’s not super-strong, the relationship remains playful and affectionate throughout, and there is not anything like a 24/7 dynamic here. Just three horny guys who fall into having sex whenever they feel like it.

Cole, especially, is ragingly sexy, and the best character in the book. He’s commanding but good-hearted, rough when he needs to be and approachable and gentle the rest of the time. A nice mix of traits, instead of an inflexible stereotype.

My only complaint about the sex is that anal sex – also known as the best sex known to humankind – is not always, or even usually, painful for the receiving partner, especially if they’re getting it on a regular basis. This does fall a bit into the women-writing-gay-men pitfall of “Hurts every time.” I’ve seen a lot of that lately, and it’s frustrating. I do like painful-pleasurable sex, so I feel kind of odd pointing it out, but . . . these are three men who live together and fuck together, and . . . well . . . it’s not going to be that much of an issue.

The story itself is a naturally compelling idea, and the author throws some interesting twists in there. My main complaint is that the supernatural elements didn’t definitively appear until about a third of the way through, when they should have been established more firmly much sooner. The book’s biggest problem is the compression of plot as things begin to escalate. Normally this is a good thing, it keeps the tension high and keeps the reader turning pages, but things went so quickly – after beginning so slowly – that the reader isn’t left with enough time to really appreciate or explore what is happening. The plot twists and complications aren’t given their due, especially toward the end, with one medical disaster after another imperiling Dylan’s life.

Dylan, too, lacks agency; he seems to exist mostly as a punching bag. Awful things happen to him. Awful things happen to him again. And, finally, really awful things happen to him. Cole is the protagonist of this story, even though he’s sharing equal stage time with Dylan. He’s the one working to fix things, find things out.  He’s the one who has to come to terms with his own supernatural powers and embrace them so he can help his friend. Dylan is the point around which the plot revolves. Cole is the one trying to control the spinning top.

The ending is abrupt, and ends with bad news just after we thing everything has been resolved. I can’t tell if it’s the lead-in to a sequel, or if it’s an authorial cheap trick, the “dun dun dunnnnn” and then fade to credits, so that we know we’re dealing with a Dark and Tragic Story Where Life Does Not Have A Happy Ending. That kind of thing works when done well, but here it felt forced and rushed. After being hurried through so much, we, as readers, have a sort of whiplash, and we really aren’t able to put the final twist into any sort of perspective. It doesn’t have the meaning it should.

So: sex, good; storytelling, interesting but frustrating; writing so-so. You could do worse. Then again, you could do better.

Forced Fantasies

Devlin works at a prestigious conservative company, doing what we’re never told, but once freed from the confines of the office he fancies himself a bad boy, with desires he keeps hidden. He fancies another man in his office, Lucas, but isn’t sure the man could deal with Devlin’s kinky needs. Devlin spends time on a fetish web site, whose owner Granger has taken an interest in him. Granger thinks Devlin might be just the boy he’s looking for, although Granger already has a partner, Tanner, about whom there’s a dark secret.

Actually, just about everybody in this book has ‘dark’ secrets, and the author never misses an opportunity to remind us of that at every turn. The amateurish attempts to create a sense of foreboding were so numerous that they got really annoying. Tanner’s secret is so blatantly telegraphed it isn’t much of surprise. Devlin’s secret desires are supposedly so extreme that they would make even hard-core kinksters blanch. I don’t think of myself as a real hard-core kinkster, but when Devlin’s ‘forced fantasy’ is played out towards the end, I had to think, “Pfft, that’s it?” The scene is hard core to be sure, but it’s fairly average as BDSM fantasies go. Lucas is the only one for whom his ‘complication’, as he put it, is something of a surprise, but he’s the least developed of the main characters.

There is plenty of good kinky sex in “Forced Fantasies”. We get a glimpse of Granger and Tanner together in their well-equipped playroom, and the scene where Devlin gets his forced fantasy is ‘interesting’ to say the least. In addition to the BDSM scenes, where whipping plays a major part, there’s also a couple of kinky public sex depictions. Unfortunately, a complete lack of proofing or editing really gets in the way of the story. There are an incredible number of typos and missing words, yet there’s no indication that this is a pre-press review copy. Even then, the number of errors is far more than I’ve ever seen. In addition to all the typos, there are places where the author appears to have mixed up the characters. After reading some paragraphs several times, I had to conclude that they only made sense if they were actually about the other character in the scene rather than the one named.

In addition to the just-plain-errors, I found the storytelling in the book to be a major turn-off. The issue is that it’s more ‘telling’ than anything else. We’re told that Tanner’s motivations are complicated, but we’re never shown that. The characters never really get a chance to develop as real people. They seem interesting enough, except for the one female main character, the owner of the sex club and Devlin’s mistress, who is a total caricature. There’s a rather good plot to this book, and a few scenes that work well, but it’s all ruined by what comes off as very amateurish writing for an accomplished author and a complete lack of any editing. I probably would have rated the book much higher were it not completely let down by the writing and proofing.

I love being here on Valentine’s Day and thank you very much for having me. It’s the day for love and sharing together, right? In truth I am not a huge fan of simply celebrating the art of love on one day alone. I think you need to indulge in love in so many ways all throughout the year. Having said that, there are several kinds of relationships that might seem out of the ordinary to some of us. Perhaps they include aspects of a mere touch of kink – like spanking and the occasional use of sex toys, or maybe you and your partner or two have delved deeper, succumbing to what some call darker desires. I obviously write highly erotic pieces including same sex, heterosexual, ménage, public display, voyeurism and BDSM and I enjoy bringing these alternative concepts to my readers. Talking about some forms of kink is still a bit hush hush and when you can hide behind a computer or kindle screen, you’re allowed to indulge in your own private fantasies.

For many avid participants and lifestylers in the BDSM world, sometimes what they read as far as BDSM pieces written by writers who may or may not practice, gives them pause. We’ve all read stories, which seem to indicate nestled within pages are aspects of BDSM, when in truth it’s more about an occasional spanking – that’s not BDSM. I’ve had several of my pieces critiqued in certain ways but what I’ve learned from reading, talking to people involved in certain methodologies and those who train others in the D/s lifestyle, there are also flavors within the realm. For many readers they only want something a bit kinky, not the full-blown scene, but you have to respect the audience in which you’re writing for. You have to be careful what you write about and certainly try and learn about the scenario before you pen it.

In my writing, I enjoy delving into giving the reader something tasty to contemplate and perhaps the courage. One thing that I very much enjoy writing about is having men and women explore the possibilities and stretch their comfort zone with people they can trust. Trust is without a doubt the number one aspect of any BDSM lifestyle and I’m not going to get into particular specifics today. From nipple clamps to spanking, domestic discipline to slave play – there’s much to learn and much to enjoy.

I think we all have our own series of fantasies and whether you can share them openly with your partner or not, you long to be able to try something, to taste something. Without a doubt, you have to be honest with your partner. If trying something like BDSM is something you want to experience, you have to know what you want and what you’re getting into. I know — it’s tough to do. One of my recent releases tells the story about a woman who craves so many things and hides them in her diary for fear she’ll be labeled weird. What she really hungers for is a polyamory lifestyle. Polyamory? That’s sharing your life with more than one significant partner. It’s a growing community and the relationships seem to be highly revered. Granted, it’s not for everyone but for some the concept is loving and financially rewarding as well.

Unleashed is also a piece about facing pain and torture from the past. Our heroine is just getting out of an abusive relationship and one of her heroes had to endure something horrible from his own past. As the finally indulge into moments of BDSM, I tried to handle it very carefully because for those who have had to endure any aspects of inflicted pain, BDSM is sometimes risky for their psyche. What I can tell you is that many men and women enjoy alternative lifestyles and there are so many places you can learn more in order to be able to make an informed decision. Let’s take a taste of Unleashed. This is just the beginning of the story and allows just inside the mindset of our men who may or may not take the challenge.

Ariana Tempest’s divorce from her abusive husband wasn’t even final but Randi knew that she had to bring her best friend out of her depression. Stealing her diary, Randi learned about her cravings for kinky acts and her lust for three men. Chaz, Shane and Galen had been their friends for years. They were professionals, roommates and secret lovers. Determined to make Ariana’s fantasies come true, she enlisted the help of the men through blackmail. Unfortunately she had no idea how many demons she unleashed.

Galen Patterson hid from the man he used to be, a past so horrendous he was unable to admit the truth. When faced with the game and Ariana’s need to become a submissive, controlled by a Master, he wasn’t certain he could handle returning to his private hell. After being convinced by his lovers that this would help in the healing process they entered into a single night of sexual exploration and a beginning. But was it the beginning of the end?

Ariana allowed herself to explore his most hidden desires, hungering for more. That is until the nefarious game was revealed. Hurt at their betrayal, she raced home only to find her soon to be ex, Nick waiting inside, begging for forgiveness but his beast hid just below the surface. Little did she know that dark secrets threatened all of them in ways that could haunt her for the rest of her life. Would she believe Nick or the man she’d fallen in love with?

“You want to challenge me, sugar?” Randi gazed at all three directly in the eyes until they realized she was deadly serious. Finally, she blew them a kiss. “So, we have a deal then. You provide her with one wild and crazy weekend where everything goes and all of her desires are fulfilled and you boys top the list this year. You know, you’ll remain the three hottest and best kept secrets in Virginia Beach and I’ll keep your little sinful skeleton in tact.” She turned on her heal grinning like a wild cat. “Oh, and you are not going to tell her a single thing about this. Nothing. If you tell her anything, so help me I will let this piece out to all the presses. One more thing, you need to use your creativity to entice and seduce. And I want you to sizzle those fantasies she has.”

“And tell me, just how to you honestly anticipate that we are going to try and accomplish this ridiculous plan?” Chaz eyed her carefully, hands on his hips. “The diary?”

“It’s not ridiculous and that’s a great start. My goodness boys, you all have incredible imaginations. Chaz, you are an erotic photographer. I want you to take some of the most sizzling photographs of her that you’ve ever produced, perhaps for future sales. And Diego, you know that dazzling strip tease act you perform at your club? Why I think you should teach her a thing or two and perhaps have her as a guest at your club. You know, the one you own? Think about it, a mischievous little dance for a naughty foursome sounds positively yummy.” Randi’s laughter sparkled into the room.

“And what about me, love? I’m a physician. What is my specialty here?” Galen asked, his voice purring like soft velvet spun with dangerous desire.

Randi glided toward him and very slowly grazed her finger down from the edge of his chin past his chiseled collarbone and placed her hand delicately onto his chest. Staring into his glistening eyes, she purred like a tiger. “Darling, you cannot lie to one of your best friends, remember? I know exactly what you desire. Domination and submission my hunky chocolate treat and she is the submissive you’ve been looking for. Plus, I’ve heard that you like to play rough doc-tor. Oh, and you just think you’re hiding that little erotic chamber of yours. But I’ve seen it.”

Galen’s face flushed as he opened and closed his mouth. “I…it’s not what you think.”

Randi smiled as she raised her eyebrow. She knew how hard he’d tried to keep his particular needs hidden, just like Ariana kept her desires of being dominated a secret. “You forget, I’ve been around the block more than once. I know exactly what it is. It’s a playroom full of S & M toys. You like to tie your lovers up and whip them into submission, my good doctor. Tease. Tempt. Punish? You know all the delicious and very wicked things the darker side of sex can offer? So I know exactly how you like to play.”

Chaz eyed Diego, who grinned and nodded toward Galen. “She has a very good point, my man.”

“Wait a minute guys. You don’t just drag someone into the lifestyle no matter what her diary says. Take it from someone who…who knows too well,” Galan said, his voice husky. “I won’t allow this and hurt her. I mean it.”

“Galen, I don’t think you’re going to hurt her. Read the diary. I can’t tell you I understand the BDSM lifestyle but you’re going to see this isn’t something that’s a whim to her. She wants to experience every aspect of it with someone she trusts and given that Nick did to her? I can’t think of three men she could trust more. Teach her. Whatever happened, Galen I don’t want to hurt you either but I know you.” Randi turned her gaze onto each man. “I know all of you. Trust in your feelings for each other and for her. You won’t regret it.”

“I don’t know if I can do this,” Galen said through clenched teeth.

Shaking her head, Randi couldn’t stop this. “Think about it.”

The men gazed at each other and remained quiet for several minutes.

“Are you serious about the blackmail?” Diego asked.

Licking her lips she sighed. “Let’s just say you know me.” Holding her crossed fingers behind her back, she prayed to God.

Chaz walked toward Galen and patted his back. “Randi is right that you know you want this.”

Galen opened and closed his mouth before glancing into Chaz’s eyes. “It could do more damage than good.”

“Then be careful and love her,” Diego suggested.

Love. At least it was there in the open and while she could tell that Galen was tortured she could also see something else in his eyes, a desire for the woman he’d hinted at wanting for years. It was about damn time. Randi sauntered toward the door and took a long moment placing the scandalous picture underneath her shirt as she licked her lips. “Hmmm… I think I have you boys all pegged. Time to party.”

Galen growled and moved toward the door. “Randi, when this weekend is done, you will get yours.”

Victoria Miller is a professor at one of the most prestigious schools in the country. She’s also the creator of several adult blogs about spanking and BDSM.  Craving a man that can understand her kinky needs, she settles for enjoying her passion through her writings, but she admires one hot college student, Drake Myers. The God like blond fuels her every night fantasies, but he is completely untouchable. Or so she believes.

Stumbling upon her blogs by accident, Drake decides to turn up the heat between them. He adores the voluptuous red-headed vixen and enlists the help of a college buddy, developing a kinky plan to have her take a tumble with him in bed and perhaps more. As he begins sending her secret poems, indulging in her need to be dominated, he is unable to resist her and one day they enter into a wicked tryst smack in the middle of her office. The game still yet to be played out, he threatens to expose her secret. And just as he decides to stop his nefarious rouse, she turns the tables.

Victoria is interrupted by one of her students as she is working on one of her blogs and holding a book on spanking and discipline. Drake sees the book and talks with some of his fraternity brothers about a card game to give the professor her fantasy.

I liked the card game the author created in Spankdown. The only caution would be to make sure the sub involved would be able to handle all the spanks by the various implements that were used. I might like to play such a game with a few modifications of the rules tailored for me.

The attraction between students and teachers have so many pitfalls, though, I was glad that the author waited until finals week to get Victoria and Drake together. The author also brought the conflict people have about how society passes judgment when a person has a different lifestyle to the attention of the reader. Sometimes this can affect their jobs.

Be aware the sex scene between Victoria and Drake is hot, but the scene after the game is even hotter. I liked the way the author handled the scene with the three men and Victoria. This will be one I will be reading again.
