Review:

When Mayhem is a big hulk who can tear a person’s head off, swallowing him may be easier said than done. This is the fifth book in Outlaw MC series. Full disclosure, I didn’t read the first 4 books. The book can be read as a standalone because Mr. Cox does a good job of recapping the situation and building on the relationship between Mayhem and Torrin.

In this world, the underdogs are the good guys in a dystopian world where the worst of humanity comes to fruition. Women are used for breeding and men of color are slaves. This story could have gone in a dark way with heavy emphasis on the sexual abuse and violations of the oppressed. Instead, Mr. Cox focuses on the rebel forces working to overthrow the evil tyrant.

This story is short and sweet. It’s action packed filled with testosterone. The men in here are fighting for their lives. The characters are memorable only by their call signs. Their personalities are more or less the same. Neither Mayhem nor Torrin did much for me. Mayhem tends to be a man with few words as he grunts out his answers. Torrin is a boy going through a painful epiphany. The lack of character engagement for me is fine because I’m more interested in the plot. I want to know what happens and how these Outlaws will bring down the corrupt government.

The sex in this book is hawt and dirty. I liked the men taking each other roughly. The swinging sex at the end is nicely done. The reason why I rated this as a 2 for sting is because the BDSM is light in here. It’s a little taste, just to whet the appetite. For those who enjoy a little rough sex with exhibition, this book will do it for you. After reading this book, I’m hooked and want to read the next one. Recommended for m/m readers who enjoy bad boys with an enemy to lover trope.

Review:

Colin “Chaos” Taylor has been sentenced to Earth. It’s the year 3001 and Mars is Chaos’s home and Earth is now a prison. In this new world, drinking, kinky sex, smoking and homosexuality are against the law. Chaos gets a six month sentence for drinking. After a harrowing trip from Mars to Earth, he faces a community that lives by survival of the fittest. In Earth’s prison, his choices are to fight, fuck or belong to a criminal named Murphy. Chaos fights. Immediately, he is attracted to Beau who is one of Murphy’s slaves. Though their time together is short, the bond they form is very strong. It has to be for Chaos to survive his remaining sentence.

This story is told in first person from Chaos’s point of view. He’s a crude character, street smart and violent. His internal language is rough and straightforward. But even though his exterior may show a man who is giving the world the middle finger, he is actually a loyal and tender person who wants what everyone else wants; someone to love. As a Dominant, he has confidence in every situation. And yet, though he exists-even thrives-in the prison’s dog eat dog world, he has a code of honor that he tried to keep in the midst of violence, manipulation and fear.

Beau, in contrast, is a much more gentle soul, able to survive because he submits. But there is much more to him. He is, even after almost four years in this hell of a prison, still a tenderhearted person who seems to accept his surroundings without being marred inside by them. His immediate attraction to Chaos turns to a kind of sweet caring that sees beyond the angry, violent exterior to the true man beneath.

In this short story, the author packs a lot of world building, and pulls it off. Mainly, I enjoyed the story because I liked Chaos. He isn’t everyone’s cup of tea, but I don’t think he gives a shit. I love sci fi and this is a great backdrop for some awesome stories. If you’re looking for a sweet, but erotic tale, this isn’t it. Chaos and Beau are no nonsense lovers and their love is hot, sweaty and erotic with a sweet taste. Their connection is filled with emotion, but there’s no soft, blurry filter. The impact of the bond still packs a punch.

I enjoyed this short novella and it’s the first of five books in the series. I strongly suggest indulging a series binge. That’s my plan.

James Cox has written a fine kink-lite science fiction/fantasy short story. His writing skills are excellent, the plot moved forward at a quick pace, and the characters were nicely developed.

The best part? The author’s humor was evident in the main character’s thoughts and disposition. Kendrew went from one naughty mess right into a firestorm and came up smiling the entire way. Love a personality with a positive, happy-as-I-am, outlook!

Be sure to add James Cox to your preferred authors list. If smiling-good-times are your delish, he’s the M/M erotica author to keep close. This book is a studly keeper!

Review:

Rescued in Paradise is the story of Sydney Carter and Connor Bradley. Sydney is a submissive woman who recently began going to Master Connor’s club, Club Paradise. While they admired one another from afar, neither approached the other for their own reasons. Master Connor is finally spurred to take action and pursue Sydney when another Dom begins to show interest in her. Master Connor initiates a scene and they spend the night with one another. But while things are starting to look up for Sydney in her personal life, an underhanded co-worker attempts to sabotage her career. When she thwarts his plan, he decides that he will get his revenge against her. Since he knows that she frequents Club Paradise, he decides that that is the perfect location in which to carry out his plan. Will he succeed in bringing Sydney to her knees, against her will? Will Master Connor be able to save her?

Rescued in Paradise was a novella with great potential and an interesting premise. However, the author tried to do too much in too few pages, which led to a mediocre story. The characters were two-dimensional with little to no back story or information which prevented the reader from becoming invested in them. The author’s writing style lacks polish. There were several instances in the book where the author’s word choice seemed to lack finesse and seemed a bit clunky.

The Sting Factor was also on the low side. There were examples of D/s (M/f), high protocol, corporal punishment and orgasm control. There were also examples of voyeurism and exhibitionism. The sex scenes themselves were of average length for a novella of less than 75 pages. The author’s ability to describe the sex scenes was hampered by her awkward writing style.

Overall, it was a good story that never reached its full potential.

Review:

Dystopia almost always implies dysfunctional society. In HEART OF A HERO, this is certainly true. In this world, the rich built their own city surrounded by a wall to keep the “undesirables” out. If that doesn’t stop them, the armed soldiers will. Instead of focusing on making a world a better place for all survivors, the haves and have-nots division is even greater in this messed up world.

Kallen is a boy who survived the outside and made it into a place like Eden. It’s a completely different world. He earned his spot by serving as a soldier and helping to end the war against the enemy who wants to bring the “Towers” to ruin. It’s basically being at the wrong place at the right time.

Kallen’s number one enemy is Lorn. Lorn is the brother of the man who is now deemed a spy.  Lorn’s brother is called a spy because of Kallen. Lorn doesn’t believe it and he confronts Kallen, head on.

This story is easy to follow and the conflict is predictable. The sex in here is erotic with very little kink. There isn’t any BDSM but there is an interesting threesome where the third participant is a sex doll. What is surprising is the ending. The  punishment did not fit the crime in my mind.  It felt forced. Since this sets up for the next book, it is understandable why the story ended the way it did. Overall this was a quick and enjoyable read. It’s recommended for m/m lovers who enjoy dystopian themes.

Review:

For me, “Embracing the Tease” is one of those nice short and sweet stories that made me smile, among a few other things as well. Normally I’m a fan of huge books, the bigger the better and most short novellas leave me wanting more, but I can honestly say I was really happy with the story length. Even though it does leave me wanting more, I was extremely content with how the story ended.

The story begins with one of the Black Rose’s co owners, Lilith, aka Madame Tease, sitting in the office bored completely out of her mind. While going through paperwork she comes across a band, Twisted Rope that her partner had scheduled to play later in the week. Since she’s never heard of them, she asks a member of the cleaning crew about the band and she tells Lilith about the band.

Next we meet Joseph Hall, the lead singer of Twisted Rope, who is struggling to write new songs for his group’s next album ever since learning about the death of his father. The Black Rose is their last stop before Joseph is able to return home and hopefully start writing songs again.

Before the band arrives at the club on a Friday night, Lilith does some research about the band and its three members and even though she’s just looking at pictures online, there’s something about Joseph that calls to her, but she’s unable to figure out as to why. Later that night before they start playing, she meets the band in her office. As they walk in she can feel something about Joseph that’s different from the other two members that he’s lost in his own world. During the brief interview before the gig is to take place, Joseph sits in silence while his two band members answer her questions. She tells them that after the show is over, they are more than welcome to partake of any of the club’s offerings. The other two leave the room, but before Joseph gets the chance, Lilith asks him if he has a problem and even though he says no, she knows better. She then invites him up to the office after their set is over.

After the set is over, the other two band members take off with a waitress to one of the rooms, but not before convincing Joseph he should go see Lilith, telling him that she wants him and they could tell she wanted him by the earlier looks. He makes his way through the crowd, ignoring the phone numbers that fans are trying to slip him as he makes his way up to the office hoping that he can find what he’s looking for with Lilith.

What happens next when Joseph enters the office nothing short of hot and steamy! I don’t want to ruin any of the fun details, but Lilith is able to get back in touch with Madame Tease and Joseph is able to find the peace he has been looking for. After each of them goes their separate ways, Joseph on his way back home to Iowa and Lilith back to her office, Lilith realizes something is missing and that something is Joseph. Once Alex, the other co-owner of the Black Rose returns from vacation, she instantly asks for three days off to start immediately. Knowing that Lilith never asks for something like this, Alex gives her the week off and Lilith is on her way to Iowa to find Joseph.

Even though I’m not particularly a fan of FemDom/male submission, I really enjoyed the story and not just the story, but the steamy scene that took place in the office which left me with quite a few of my own lustful thoughts. Not only was there some well written kink in the story, but the story itself is one that is quite well written and attention grabbing.

Review:

Turning Tricks is a story of desperation and the things people do in times of need. Lida moved to Chicago to be with her boyfriend and to help put him through Law School. When he leaves her, wipes out her bank account and fails to tell her that they are about to be evicted for failure to pay their rent, Lida becomes desperate. She has less than 3 days to earn $1500 or else she will be homeless. With no savings and no job, Lida resorts to selling herself in order to keep a roof over her head. So she dresses the way she thinks a high class prostitute would dress and heads out to a local hotel to find a “date”. This is when she encounters Dave, a salesman in town from Minnesota for the weekend. One thing leads to another and before Lida knows it, she is alone with Dave in his hotel room. Will she be able to go through with it? How much should she charge? And what, exactly, does he want her to do to earn the entire $1500 in one night?

Turning Tricks is a short story with some heart and an amusing little twist. The author’s writing style flows nicely and is easy to read. The characters are well developed for a short story and likable, thus allowing the reader to empathize with and care about them in a relatively short amount of time. The plot is not original, but then, neither is the oldest profession that Lida embarks upon. The pace of the story is quick, but slow enough that the story does not feel rushed.

The Sting Factor is medium. The story described scenes of D/s (M/f), high protocol, corporal punishment and bondage. The sex scenes are average in length for a short story, but flow well and are attention-grabbing. The scenes are on the brief side, but that is to be expected in a short story.

Overall, a must read for anyone looking for something that starts dark but ends light.

Review:

The Crimson Rope is an anthology filled with short stories of the BDSM variety so the best way to handle the reviews is to break it down by author.

The Exhibition by London Saint James

This extremely short story is about two friends finding what they need in each other. Slater and Bianca have loved each other from afar for quite some time but it takes one night of passion to bring the two together. Slater the all consuming artist has as air of dominance while Bianca appears to be merely intrigued by what he is into. Will the two be able to find their way in their new relationship?

Well unfortunately that question is not answered in this rather underdeveloped story by London Saint James. It is honestly quite sad when an author provides more information in a short paragraph about a character smoking a cigarette than when describing a BDSM scene. Though this story had a great deal of potential it was not developed at all. This story receives a one out of five paddles.

Amazing Maisie by Raven McAllen

Maisie found out the hard way that the man she wants more than anything wants a whole lot more from her. Rob is a Dom through to his very core and definitely not something Maisie expected. But after an amazing night with him she is willing to give it a try to be his perfect little submissive. Unfortunately for Maisie Rob had to go out of town right after that perfect night. So what’s a Dom to do? Email of course keeping her on her very edge and learning the whole time. What happens when Rob comes home? Well you need to read to find out.

Even though this is a short story and a better back story would have been nice this story speaks to the learning submissive’s heart. Though the scenes are a little closer to vanilla the emails and other communications make up for it. Raven McAllen’s short story was absolutely wonderful and is awarded four out of five paddles for this short story.

Liberating Lua by Elyzabeth M. VaLey

A simple story of a wife wanting nothing more to please her husband’s every desire. The setting is during a time frame to where the Lord of the castle could do as he pleased and in this case had a mistress who was all too willing to encourage the Lord’s beautiful wife Lua to take her place.  Can Lua handle her beloved husband’s desires?

In all honesty this short story came across as an exercise in the use of synonyms when it comes to terms for the anatomy of the human body. The scene, though fairly well written, came across more as a bedroom game than that of BDSM. The story suffered from a real disconnects and felt as if the author did not connect with her characters. This story receives two out of five paddles.

Taboo by Doris O’Connor

What a girl wouldn’t do to get the attention of the man she truly desires and in this case Lucy finally obtains what she has always wanted…a Dom. Josh is much older than Lucy but no one turns him on like his little impish angel does. Unfortunately due to his age and his perception of Lucy prevents him from finding pleasure, joy, and happiness in the BDSM world until one night he finds his precious Lucy in the very club that he frequents. Now that Josh knows little Lucy’s secret the question becomes how will he handle it?

Once again there is not enough of a back story to set the stage for why Lucy desires being a submissive. Unfortunately much of that information comes way too late in the story which messes with the story’s effectiveness. Kudos on the singular scene of BDSM. It was well written. Had the author taken the time to turn this short story into at least a novella the storyline would have been much more developed. This short story receives three out of five paddles.

Lock, Stock, and Spank Her by R. Brennan

Beth found herself at a munch with a friend of hers who happens to be a Mistress in search of her own Dom. Alexander a Dom just returning to the BDSM set after the devastating loss of his submissive three years prior. Little did they both know that they would find what they were looking for at that munch. Will Beth find the Dom who is right for her? And will Alexander find himself the right submissive to help him heal?

This is a very sweet story and has the makings of an excellent novella instead of a short story. The scenes are well thought out and well written. It seems that the focus was supposed to be Beth but instead it became about Beth and Alexander. That sort of devotion to understanding the needs of the characters is rare in such a short story. This story receives four out of five paddles.

The Cowboy and the Schoolmarm by Nikki Prince

Melanie a young girl who married for all the wrong reasons and to a man who only wanted to possess her because of who she was in love with. Shiloh a young man who needed to go out into the world to make sure he could handle living in that small town with his loving Melanie. Now they are both all grown up and Melanie a widow. Will the sparks fly once again?

Such a sweet story that could have been developed into a much more in depth story. With that said what bit of story that is told here is simply wonderful including the very small amount of BDSM that was incorporated into it. The one and only scene was well written and definitely captures the attention of the reader. So this story receives a four out of five paddles.

Through his eyes and his lens Sally finds much more than she bargains for including a true understanding of her need to submit.

Sorry for the brief introduction to this beautiful short story but if more information was given it would give away way to much information. Doris O’Connor is one of very few authors as of late that has managed to stun this reviewer. To be able to capture the true beauty of a submissive’s heart is very difficult to do to begin with but to add in a Master who actually understood how to handle such a true gift is absolutely amazing. The BDSM scenes are simply stunning and well done described for how a blooming Dom/submissive relationship should be. Safe, Sane, and Consensual are reinforced throughout this whole story. Review:

Retraining the Dom is the story of Trevor “Trey” Knight and Olivia Redmond. Master Trey is a harsh Master who has gone off the rails. He has stopped looking for or recognizing when his subs may be in distress, he has ignored safe words and has let scenes get so far out of hand that Dungeon Monitors needed to physically stop a scene before Trey did permanent damage to his sub. Warnings have not works, so what is Club Allure to do? Give him an ultimatum: either successfully complete the Dominant Retraining Course or leave and never come back. The hitch, is that his retraining course requires that he must sub for a Domme, namely, Mistress Olivia. Once finding out that he has been blackballed from every local BDSM club due to his behavior and the only way to fix this is to successfully complete the retraining course, he very reluctantly agrees, but it will not be easy. Trey doesn’t believe that he has a submissive bone in his body, and he has always sworn NEVER to be under the control of the woman. It will take all of Mistress Olivia’s skill and cunning to get through to the stubborn Dom. But, will she be successful?

Retraining the Dom had a lot of promise. The story idea was appealing and the author’s writing style is pleasing and easy to follow. Unfortunately, the story fell far short of its potential. The characters were very two dimensional and any character development seemed contrived and implausible. They are both tortured by their pasts, yet overcome these traumatic events simply by engaging in a few scenes with one another. While I recognize that this is a Novella (at only a little over 90 pages), thus there is not a great deal of room for back stories, this still would not account for the lack of believable character development.

As for the kink, the scenes fell flat for me. They were rather short and unimaginative. They consisted of light taps/spankings, light sensual flogging, bed bondage, honor bondage on a St. Andrew’s Cross, orgasm control and a ménage a trois. There was not a great deal of detail to any of the scenes and the characters actions did not fit with their personalities or their roles in the power exchange dynamic.

Overall, high marks for potential, but low marks for execution.
