Corporate Slave by Fulani

Story Rating: 4 out of 5 paddles

Sting Factor (kink): 5 out of 5

Enter dystopia filled with sexual slavery and where sadistic BDSM is the norm. Cassie is just one of millions trying to make it through life. Is it even worth it? She’s a shop assistant at a grocery type store. She doesn’t bag the groceries or ring them at check out. She does show customers the products by attracting them with her naked body while dancing in a glass cage. In this world Fulani creates, sex sells and it’s the dirty currency everyone uses. Even 100 dollars is renamed to a blow job.

Fulani creates quite the interesting world post government. In this new age, the Corporations take over the failing country and corruption runs rampant. People are kidnapped off the street accused of being dissents against the Corporation. This could be considered speculative genre. Although, to be honest, it amuses because it almost feels as if it is based on a few existing countries in this world. These existing countries which are run similar to this world aren’t run by the “evil capitalistic Corporations”. It’s only run by greedy tyrannical sadists. In this point, the book aligns with current world realities.

This book is definitely for those who enjoy non-consensual savagery. It is blazing hot in its sadistic tortures. Most of the edgeplay are beyond what people can handle in real life. This is not the book to use as a BDSM 101 guide because it will mean a fast trip to prison while the bottom is either at the ER or in the morgue. There is no SSC or RACK. Instead it’s just one painful interrogation after another. Or at least that is how it comes across at times. Now how can this be arousing? This is the beauty of Fulani’s writing. His characters enjoy the sexual experiences no matter how cruel and unusual. It is very clear Cassie is a depraved pain slut and she revels in it.  Because he creates his characters to enjoy both the giving and receiving, no matter how perverse, the story is really hot and good. Would it be something this reader would in real life? HELL to the NO. However, reading it vicariously is a titillating voyeuristic indulgence.

This book isn’t all about sex, sex, sex and more sex. There is a plot which lightly touched upon with rebel forces organizing to overthrow the “Man”. The “Man” in this world are the evil Corporations and their executives. This anti-capitalism message is rather heavy handed near the end and really doesn’t add to the story. At least, not for this greedy capitalistic reader. Still, it’s an entertaining “what if scenario” about humans exploitation as a common commodity. This dark book is recommended only to those who enjoy sadistic nonconsensual acts.

The Museum of Deviant Desires by Fulani

This is an 11 story anthology containing some pretty darn extraordinary writing.

Fulani’s writing is nuanced but accessible and of great quality, and his grasp of both the submissive and dominant mindset is spot on and comes through in every story.  There is BDSM content in every story.

Many of the stories are . . . I don’t know what to call it.  Edgy, modern, industrial-flavored stories full of unlikely situations, grit, grease, and urban decay.  Some are very strange, some are very sexy, and all are quite memorable.  There is not a single boring moment here, even when the situations didn’t strike me as sexy.

The stories that don’t fit this pattern are extraordinary as well, and contain some of my favorites.  He enjoys the psychological angle, the anticipation, and evokes these things quite well . . . and sometimes stops there.  Sadistic.

Standouts here are Poppy Seeks Pain, Waiting, Voiceover, and the title track, Museum of Deviant Desires.

The only misstep, and it is a tiny one, is a little bit of problematic language re: transgendered individuals in the title story.  It could easily have been the viewpoint character, and not the author, but as much as I hate doing it, I feel obligated to call people out for it.  But it’s only two instances early on, and no actual for-sure trans* individuals appear in the story, so nothing goes horribly, horribly wrong (as I was afraid it might).

So: absolutely recommended if you are looking for something gritty, modern, playful, and strange.

Hanging Around

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 Paddles

It’s two in the morning, and Mariska is dangling from a rope and displaying a lot of flesh to her tormentors. And she giggles. She’s been looking for something new in her life, and being a film extra in a low-budget zombie horror movie is certainly new… Twelve stunning chapters follow Mariska’s journey from barista to member of a group of bohemian artists, actors and others. She’s inducted into their fetish-oriented lifestyle, and along the way she’s tied, whipped, fisted and more in situations ranging from a film set to a lesbian club to an art exhibition. Oh, and somehow she finds time to write a journal about it. Fulani’s erotic stories, often dark and with BDSM-based themes, have appeared in numerous anthologies and ‘zines.

Hanging Around has a lot of different fetishes represented in Mariska’s stories. While all the same characters are present throughout, each chapter is a snippet of another exciting event in Mariska’s life – except for a few that are told from another woman’s perspective.

Mariska is a young woman looking for something new. And she has found it. As she meets a few new people, she finds herself in a world of bondage, pain, D/s, and free love. A lot of this made me think of the free open love you hear about from the 70’s. There is no set partner for Mariska although she does lean towards a few.

As Mariska begins exploring more of her sexuality, she engages in numerous exploits and enjoys every bit of them. She is displayed as art, photographed, sketched, bound, gagged, whipped, and so much more. This is a refreshing tale of being able to revel in your sexuality as Mariska partners with men and women to explore new sensations.

Hanging Around is a must read if you are looking for unique flavors from a woman who has had a life many of us wish we could lead. Enjoy her exploits as if they were your own.

Ruth’s work leaves no time for relationships. Traveling a lot and living in hotel rooms, her sex life revolves around one-night-stands. In a hotel bar, one night, she encounters a professional bondage rigger and maker of dungeon equipment. His occupation might be strange, but he’s more together and more interesting than most of the men she meets. When he offers her a challenge, she can’t resist it. And it leads her into an addiction to rope.

Rope. Rope. Rope. I, personally, am fascinated by rope bondage. Shibari is something I’ve never tried but am extremely interested in. When I saw the name of this book, I knew immediately I had to read it.

Ruth is a driven professional woman, a corporate trainer to be exact. She relaxes by having one night stands with guys she picks up in the various cities she visits. While looking for a new sex partner, she meets Leo. When she learns he’s a professional rigger, she’s stunned but interested. He gives her a small taste of domination in the hotel bar and then they part ways with his room number and an offer for more if she’s interested. Since this is not the end of the book, you can guess she’s interested.

The book progresses rather quickly. She’s given an immediate introduction to ropes, and more. I was a bit surprised by the level things progressed to in the first scene. In real life, it generally takes a bit more time to build up the trust required to do some of those things. However, this is fantasy, and it was very hot.

This book is heavy sex, light plot. Not a bad thing, if that’s what you want in a read. I was hooked until Chapter 4, at which point the story took a bit of a turn for me. I like being able to place myself in the position of the female character when I read a story, but Ruth became obsessed. Obsessed not just with rope, but with becoming a “cheap whore” just for free instead of cheap. Instead of being a book I can sink into, it became more of a porn flick on paper… you can watch from a distance and enjoy it on a different level.

There were some editing issues but they weren’t overly distracting. I would definitely read this book again if I was just looking for a really quick read to heat me up. However, there are other books that I can get deeper into that give me just as much heat.
