Review:

I should start by saying that I really wanted to like this book. I have a fondness for kinky historical novels, especially if the author places the story in a believable historical context and has done sufficient research to ensure period accuracy. I’m afraid that this book fails somewhat in this respect.

The prologue introduces the reader to a secret society of aristocratic Dominants, The Order of Exalted Blackguards who trade their daughters between them, with the aim of acquiring perfect submissive wives, who will provide a full range of sexual services for their Lords and I was a little puzzled by the Blackguards, surely the main criteria in choosing an aristocratic wife was the size of her dowry rather than her skills as a submissive? Submissive males don’t seem to have much place in this society and yet kinky British aristocrats of the period were just as likely, if not more so, to be sexual submissive’s themselves. The professional Dominants of London’s Whipping Houses were kept in business by gentleman of the Upper Classes.

Claudia, the heroine has led the life of a carefree tomboy, when her father, a member of the Blackguards decides. just before her 18th birthday to bestow her on Nathaniel, Lord Tarrington, Earl of Brighton. Up until this point ignorant of her parents true relationship, Claudia is packed off to a ‘Finishing School’ in Brighton to have her spirit broken and to be trained in her submissive duties.

It is there that she meets her husband, who informs her of his expectations of their marriage, “You will be kept just like a whelping bitch in heat, wearing a collar of ownership and even a lead if I so choose. There isn’t anything I can do to you that you will not plead with me to do more of.”

The flaw in this reasoning is that Claudia is not a submissive and forcing her into the role will only lead to rebellion and loathing. Nathaniel is not an intelligent man and it takes him some time to realise that if he wants anything like a harmonious relationship with Claudia, he will have to soften his approach.

The title is misleading, I wouldn’t call this book a romance but it is certainly very kinky. It could have done with better editing, aristocratic titles are frequently misused, Lady Ellingsworth is frequently referred to as Miss Ellingsworth, Lord Hastings is sometimes called ‘Sir Hastings’ and there are other similar errors in describing other characters.

**Though set in a historical setting, this book contains BDSM themes.**

When Claudia Rose Stafford made her debut in London, she was wealthy, headstrong, and beautiful. She was also spoiled, arrogant and ill-mannered. Without her father’s presence, Claudia flaunted her disdain for rules. She defied the conventions of high society and didn’t care if there were scandalous whispers because of her behavior. All that changed when her father returned from abroad with the announcement of her impending marriage.

Lord Nathaniel Tarrington is the Earl of Brighton. He is also a member of a clandestine sect comprised of some of the most powerful and wealthy families in Europe. The very existence of their Order is cloaked in secrecy, and their activities carefully guarded. When the time comes for him to wed, his choice of a bride has life-altering consequences for Claudia Stafford. The Earl has demanding expectations for his wife, ones that include complete submission, and the understanding that her place is at his feet or in his bed, and never on his
arm.

Once Claudia weds Nathaniel, her life is not her own. Gone are the days of dancing and champagne. Harsh training and the expectation of immediate and utter obedience becomes the norm. Defiance brings punishment, but Claudia is unwavering, and must battle those who would have her be meek. Her fiery spirit rebels in the face of Nathaniel’s rigid instruction, but the once willful and reckless woman struggles to fight her husband’s sadistic demands. A fierce war begins between them; one fought for pride and dignity; that may leave both of their hearts in tatters. Will love ever stand a chance as Lord Nathaniel Tarrington strives to tame his wayward wife?

Jolynn Raymond has written a book that shares the details of her own long lasting domestic discipline marriage and her experience surrounding power exchange relationships. It explains why these unconventional relationships work so well for so many couples. The book is an in-depth tutorial that takes the relationship past the simple act of discipline, to building a rock solid foundation that will ultimately create a deep bond of trust and love between those involved.
Taken In Hand will guide those interested in adding consensual domestic discipline, dominance and submission, and structure to their own relationship through the initial steps of communication, understanding and discovering both partner’s needs, creating mutual and realistic expectations, rules, and consequences, to the inevitable first spanking.

Taken In Hand will prove useful to those just starting out, as well as to those with some experience, as Ms. Raymond outlines the pitfalls, difficulties, and successes she has encountered in her own marriage. She also emphasizes the importance of consent, and pays special attention to the fine line between discipline and abuse.

The last part of the book examines the styles and types of spanking, gives an anal sex tutorial, talks about the responsibilities or being a dominant and gives tips for the submissive partner. Whether you need insight into BDSM as it relates to relationships or are trying to build a domestic discipline marriage from scratch, Taken In Hand will prove to be a comprehensive and practical guide.

Review:

Sweet Agony by Jolynn Raymond is a collection of five erotic BDSM short stories. All the stories in this anthology feature heterosexual couples with a male dominant and female submissive dynamic. For the most part they are well-written BDSM masturbation fodder, as the entirety of each tale consists of a fairly elaborate pain and pleasure scenario but nothing else. There is no plot to speak of beyond a smattering of references to the character’s relationship and life.

Basically, what the reader gets is nonstop action that often becomes fairly intense – ranging from role playing to teasing and denial to severe spanking/whipping. The interaction in the vignettes includes clever and insightful exchanges between the Dom and the sub and even a bit of humor. Overall I recommend this to BDSM aficionados who enjoy pure erotica without a storyline.

Excerpt:

Lillith stretched, sighing for just a moment at the thought of getting out of the warm bed, but then remembered the task at hand, and quickly jumped up. It was time for coffee and fun. She wanted to make sure everything was in place for when her unsuspecting submissive arrived home.

She poured herself a cup of coffee then wandered around taking note of everything they had at their disposal for a good long BDSM play session. Over the past months between what they had each brought into the relationship and the new toys they seemed to acquire almost weekly, there was a multitude of things that caused both pain and pleasure to work with, as well as plenty of places to play. This was going to be fun.

Finishing her coffee, Lillith began to make a mental list of where she was going to put things. Each choice, or box/curtain as it had been called on the old game show ‘Let’s Make a Deal’, had to have items of pleasure and pain. The trick for Cynthia would be making the choices that would bring more orgasms than pain as the game progressed. Lillith wanted to be sure that Cynthia’s favorite things would be placed so they were chosen last, that way the game could escalate, and give a delicious mixture of the two as the scene unfolded.

Lillith knew the choices alone were enough to put her girl on edge. Cynthia had a horrid time making decisions when it was asked of her during their play. Part of the release she craved came from allowing each little detail of her pain and pleasure go into Lillith’s hands. Doing so let her be free, but Lillith thought there could be sweet agony in forcing Cynthia to choose her own destiny as well.

Once she had decided where each toy and implement of punishment would go, Lillith quickly got to work, nodding in satisfaction as she went, the familiar tingle of anticipation filling her at the thought of what would take place when Cynthia got home. When she was done she took a quick shower, and then crawled back into bed to wait for her sweet slut’s call.

The phone rang just as she was dozing off. It appeared Cynthia had gotten her work done in a hurry. Lillith reached for the phone, smiling. Soon it would be playtime.

When you first started writing, did you have any idea you’d be writing BDSM/kinky books? Do you write in any other genre?

I began writing more romance style stories that were pretty erotic, and these evolved into historical romances with heavy doses of BDSM. Before I engaged in BDSM, the relationships in my writing were vanilla. As I evolved into D/s relationships my romance couples did as well. This made my BDSM M/f slanted instead of F/f because M/f is much more mainstreamed throughout history.

I think it would be much harder to write a historical romance that involved a BDSM relationship between two women. Not because there weren’t women couples, but because they couldn’t go out and about in society in years past and relate to the world as an open lesbian couple. One book has spanking as a punishment and it more represents how many husbands chastised or treated their wives throughout history than it does BDSM, and that couldn’t be written as a F/f relationship.

My other historical romance has BDSM. I refer to it as a kinky historical romance.  I am a huge history buff and somewhat of a geek, so historical romances satisfy that side of me. I have written some paranormal suspense as well and have a paranormal erotic historical romance in the works now.

My BDSM books are collections of short stories. They are made from stories I have written for my submissives over time as little rewards or gifts, or derived from dare I admit it, fan fiction I once wrote.

Are you actively involved in BDSM? If so how do you identify yourself? Dom(me)/sub? Top/bottom? Switch?

I have been in BDSM relationships for over 10 years, am very involved in the kink community and live a D/s lifestyle. I identify as a dominant lesbian/ Mistress. I married and collared my wife a year and a half ago. We are monogamous and live a domestic discipline lifestyle. My wife is a stay at home housewife who cares for our home and for me. We purchased a home last February and now have the proverbial house with a white picket fence and a dungeon in the basement. Our power exchange relationship is that she cares for me and I care for us.

I also have several male service submissives who do household chores and yard work. One fixes things inside and is a handyman type, one cares for the outside landscaping, and one does chores that are too difficult for my wife and cooks the occasional meal. My relationship with my service subs is completely non sexual. Their reward comes from their sincere desire to serve, and from getting to serve at the occasional CFNM (clothed female, nude male) or play party.

I have a play partner who fulfills my very sadistic side. We engage in heavy impact play. He is a hard core masochist. Our play is completely non sexual. My wife and I do more sensual and sexual play. She enjoys floggings and light impact only, so there is a big difference in my play styles with each of them.

Is there one area of BDSM that you tend to write about more? Why do you think that area creeps into your writing more than some others?

Much of the play in my books is impact play that is very sexual. It’s what I enjoy most when I engage in BDSM activities, so it’s what I enjoy writing. I am somewhat rope impaired so bondage doesn’t come into play much, and I dislike humiliation. The terms of whore, slut, little bitch are mostly used as endearments. I enjoy having power over my wife’s orgasms so the play is heavily sexual as well. I write what I do. I think that’s pretty natural.

Is there an area that is BDSM/kink-related that you haven’t written about yet that you’re interested in?

One of my guys would really like me to do a collection of F/m stories. I am considering that or possibly a how to guide for CFNM parties. They are widely fantasized about by a lot of guys on Fetlife, and I had great success with the CFNM party my wife and I held, so I will most definitely either write a shot story about the party, or as I said, write a how to guide.

What have you written in the past that you think your BDSM/kink fans might find interesting?

I have a collection of M/f BDSM stories called “Sweet Agony”. I also have a short story called “Dining In” that is a very mild BDSM story that I published on its own to target erotica readers who might not be into heavy kink. Both are on Amazon as well as two kinky historical romances. “Lessons of Love” is more domestic discipline. “Elizabeth’s Destiny” is a historical romance with heavy BDSM scenes.

What is your favorite fetish? Why?

Most of my play involves impact. I’m a medium level sadist so that’s what gets me heated up. I also really enjoy giving anal because of the level of submission involved. It’s a great power exchange. If I am bottoming, I love electrical play. Violet wands are my new favorite toy for topping or bottoming. It’d hard to pick a favorite fetish. Why limit myself?

At this point in your career, do you think you’ll write more BDSM/kinky erotica?

Absolutely. I am compiling and editing my collection of F/f  BDSM erotica right now and have been thinking on the best approach for a F/m book. My muse is always whispering ideas for kinky books into my ear so I don’t see my stopping anytime in the future. The amount of fetishes that potential readers have is huge, so my well of kinky ideas should never run dry.

What’s the most surprising piece of feedback you’ve ever received from a fan of your writing?

I was a bit taken aback the first time someone told me they masturbated to my stories. People had told me that they needed a cold shower or things like that, but when she came right out and told me how she had to touch herself it was a bit surprising. Now I’m pretty used to people telling me they need to get their Hitachi or some such thing. I joke and say I’ve made hundreds of people orgasm. It’s honestly a heavy dose of power for the dominant in me.

Do you attend BDSM, kink, or fetish conferences? Or do you attend any other “vanilla” type of conferences? Attending any in the near future you want to mention?

My wife and I love the big events. We’ve been to Kinky Kollege in Chicago a couple of times, Madtown Kinkfest quite a bit, and would really like to do a road trip out to Denver for Thunder in the Mountains. The last time we went to Kinky Kollege they had well known BDSM authors as the main theme. My wife was so excited, she got to meet Janet Hardy. It was a great time. Being surrounded by kinky people for a whole weekend is a great feeling.

Sometimes my work schedule is hard to work with when trying to get to events. I have to be conscious of what kind of security they have as well, in order to keep my activities a secret because of my job.  As for a regular or vanilla convention, I haven’t been to anything that wasn’t work related.

Here’s the perfect stocking stuffer for the kinky person on your list. Sweet Agony is a collection of erotic BDSM scenes.    There is no long build-up of surrounding story line, just snap shots of real life erotic M/f, BDSM play. That is not to say the stories are purely porn without a plot. The characters are fleshed out, there is dialog, and there is enough backstory to become intimately connected to the participants in each scene as well as creating an emotional connection between the players themselves. The reader joins each couple just prior to the BDSM scene taking place, or at the start of it, and is drawn into their world of kinky and highly explicit sex. Not all real life BDSM is sexual. All of the stories within this book are.
