Review:

The Crimson Rope is an anthology filled with short stories of the BDSM variety so the best way to handle the reviews is to break it down by author.

The Exhibition by London Saint James

This extremely short story is about two friends finding what they need in each other. Slater and Bianca have loved each other from afar for quite some time but it takes one night of passion to bring the two together. Slater the all consuming artist has as air of dominance while Bianca appears to be merely intrigued by what he is into. Will the two be able to find their way in their new relationship?

Well unfortunately that question is not answered in this rather underdeveloped story by London Saint James. It is honestly quite sad when an author provides more information in a short paragraph about a character smoking a cigarette than when describing a BDSM scene. Though this story had a great deal of potential it was not developed at all. This story receives a one out of five paddles.

Amazing Maisie by Raven McAllen

Maisie found out the hard way that the man she wants more than anything wants a whole lot more from her. Rob is a Dom through to his very core and definitely not something Maisie expected. But after an amazing night with him she is willing to give it a try to be his perfect little submissive. Unfortunately for Maisie Rob had to go out of town right after that perfect night. So what’s a Dom to do? Email of course keeping her on her very edge and learning the whole time. What happens when Rob comes home? Well you need to read to find out.

Even though this is a short story and a better back story would have been nice this story speaks to the learning submissive’s heart. Though the scenes are a little closer to vanilla the emails and other communications make up for it. Raven McAllen’s short story was absolutely wonderful and is awarded four out of five paddles for this short story.

Liberating Lua by Elyzabeth M. VaLey

A simple story of a wife wanting nothing more to please her husband’s every desire. The setting is during a time frame to where the Lord of the castle could do as he pleased and in this case had a mistress who was all too willing to encourage the Lord’s beautiful wife Lua to take her place.  Can Lua handle her beloved husband’s desires?

In all honesty this short story came across as an exercise in the use of synonyms when it comes to terms for the anatomy of the human body. The scene, though fairly well written, came across more as a bedroom game than that of BDSM. The story suffered from a real disconnects and felt as if the author did not connect with her characters. This story receives two out of five paddles.

Taboo by Doris O’Connor

What a girl wouldn’t do to get the attention of the man she truly desires and in this case Lucy finally obtains what she has always wanted…a Dom. Josh is much older than Lucy but no one turns him on like his little impish angel does. Unfortunately due to his age and his perception of Lucy prevents him from finding pleasure, joy, and happiness in the BDSM world until one night he finds his precious Lucy in the very club that he frequents. Now that Josh knows little Lucy’s secret the question becomes how will he handle it?

Once again there is not enough of a back story to set the stage for why Lucy desires being a submissive. Unfortunately much of that information comes way too late in the story which messes with the story’s effectiveness. Kudos on the singular scene of BDSM. It was well written. Had the author taken the time to turn this short story into at least a novella the storyline would have been much more developed. This short story receives three out of five paddles.

Lock, Stock, and Spank Her by R. Brennan

Beth found herself at a munch with a friend of hers who happens to be a Mistress in search of her own Dom. Alexander a Dom just returning to the BDSM set after the devastating loss of his submissive three years prior. Little did they both know that they would find what they were looking for at that munch. Will Beth find the Dom who is right for her? And will Alexander find himself the right submissive to help him heal?

This is a very sweet story and has the makings of an excellent novella instead of a short story. The scenes are well thought out and well written. It seems that the focus was supposed to be Beth but instead it became about Beth and Alexander. That sort of devotion to understanding the needs of the characters is rare in such a short story. This story receives four out of five paddles.

The Cowboy and the Schoolmarm by Nikki Prince

Melanie a young girl who married for all the wrong reasons and to a man who only wanted to possess her because of who she was in love with. Shiloh a young man who needed to go out into the world to make sure he could handle living in that small town with his loving Melanie. Now they are both all grown up and Melanie a widow. Will the sparks fly once again?

Such a sweet story that could have been developed into a much more in depth story. With that said what bit of story that is told here is simply wonderful including the very small amount of BDSM that was incorporated into it. The one and only scene was well written and definitely captures the attention of the reader. So this story receives a four out of five paddles.

When Susanna Campion sets her sights on the incomparable Anthony Provost, Earl of Sentern, she isn’t about to go at it the usual way at all.

In a time where marriages were arranged by well-meaning mothers, Susanna finds herself in a pickle. Her mother is about to fix her up to be wed. She wants nothing to do with the typical arrangement leaving her nothing more than a brood mare for an heir and a spare. Susi wants to make up her own mind. Her best friend shares her wild blood and has told her of her own marriage bed. Filled with wanton delight, Susi is determined to find a man of her choosing, even if it is the same one her mother has chosen for her. She needs to be certain they are right for each other, both in the bedroom and out.

Setting up Tony was the easy part. When he decides to bite and take matters into his very capable hands, Susi has to decide if she is willing to play his games. Carnal lust and some very naughty transgressions take place, leading the pair down a bridal path filled with thorns and all that is delicious in love.

This short book was a delightful tale of a woman and man who know what they want and don’t hesitate to take risks to find a life partner suited to their needs. How fun that they were meant for each other. Better bedded before being wed so they could find out just how well meant they were. With spankings and outlandish behavior that would have scandalized both sets of parents, Tony and Susi forge a bond of Master and sub forever bound together in holy matrimony.

This was a fun read and I couldn’t put it down.

Review:

How do you write a book about BDSM and the “lifestyle” and never fully discuss it? There were hints of things like handcuffs, spankings and Shibari ropes; but no real action. It read like a vanilla romance with some kinky words thrown in by a “tourist”.

Anna (Dianna) – If her husband’s “lifestyle” and needs were the problem why is she a personal assistant to a Domme who owns a private club? Why sit in reception and not see what is on the other side? Surrounded by the very things she ran from, saying I am not going to look on the other side of the door is ridiculous. She was the kind of character that made no sense to me. One minute she was saying, ‘I love you’ and the next she was leaving to sort herself out. Anna needed sorting all right and she did not deserve the patience and kindness the other characters showed her, especially her husband Caden.

Caden – This character is a friggin’ saint. He did demo’s and taught others but did not allow his heart to get involved again after his wife/sub left him. He held on to the hope of her return for fifteen years. Letting her be in charge during the reconciliation only got history to repeat itself.

This Master deserved much more than Anna could offer him because she was too wrapped up into her own insecurities and issues to discuss things with him. She disrespected him by not communicating. He did not recognize the signs of her unhappiness during the first part of their marriage because of her lack of honest communication. Caden needed to walk away.

This book was frustrating and difficult to read. Caden, the dominant Master became Anna’s doormat. Not something a strong Dom would ever do, real or fictional. Both of them need to be bound and paddled. Reading erotic books is supposed to be hot and sexy; this was neither.

Review:

This was a very short story, but still hard to finish because it consisted primarily of the two main characters bickering in British slang.

Jane and Sean did a scene together once and it wonderful for both of them-so much so that Sean asked Jane to wear his collar. He was confused about why she refused. He has invited her over to explain herself. Although submissive, Jane has her own reasons for not jumping into a collared relationship.

Can these two work through their issues and reach an HEA?

The sex scenes were hot, and the wax play intense, but I had several problems with the story.  One there were some errors such as name confusion; I didn’t like the bickering; and it was just too short a story. However, the author shows promise, and I will try others by her.

William, Lord Barlow is being forced into a marriage of convenience. A marriage neither he nor the lady want. He has his own life and his own needs. One snowy night William is kidnapped. Just who is this kidnapper and why is he enjoying this so much?

Review:

The Dom being ‘forced’ into the sub position, having the tables turned, not having control of the situation. I love it! I love that Will was the one who wanted this and his lover, his sub, was the one who took the initiative to make his Sir’s wishes come true. To learn what it’s like to submit…..to not have control over the situation. The enjoyment that Will received from his experience was what I was looking for and what I received! The ending caught me by surprise, but it was perfect. I loved how Raven tied it all together and ended on such a loving and positive note. An enjoyable short read!
