“The Right Direction” is a sequel to “Facing the Truth” by the same author. In the first book, Tom and Isaac came to terms, albeit reluctantly on Isaac’s part, with their mutual desire to explore a D/s BDSM relationship. In this follow-on, the two are preparing to spend an entire weekend in play, with young Tom wearing the much-older Isaac’s collar the whole time. Isaac has purchased some new toys, and he’s very much looking forward to trying them out on Tom.
The weekend starts on Friday night, with a little training for Tom, who is eager but inexperienced as a submissive. Since Isaac has no experience as a master, it’s a challenge for him to stay one step ahead of his sub and remain in control, yet still be attentive to Tom’s unknown limits. By Saturday he’s ready to give Tom a taste of the new flogger and cane. The sub clearly has a taste for pain, but how much can he take?
In a way, this very short book of just 48 pages could be seen as a primer for beginner Doms. Told from Isaac’s point of view, we get a lot of insight into his thoughts, his fears of hurting Tom, and his own excitement at what he’s doing. The problem is, most of this is revealed through the author telling us this, rather than showing us through Isaac’s actions. Granted it’s difficult to easily demonstrate emotions through actions, but unfortunately it all comes out rather stilted. Even much of the dialog comes across as a bit too pedantic. The author does occasionally demonstrate a good ear for Tom’s voice, but then sometimes he comes across as too mature for a twenty-something.
