Synopsis:

Clouds darken. Lightning sears the dying day. Savage energy overwhelms logger Deon Coleman. A beer at the small-town bar isn’t enough. He needs to dominate and rule. Only stripping Marah Quinn naked and wrapping her in his ropes will satisfy the fierce creature he has become.

Instead of fearing this powerful man from her past, Marah surrenders her body to him. She has no choice. The storm has changed her. The night closes around Deon’s log cabin.  A door locks. No longer a modern, independent woman, she has become a submissive kneeling before her dom.

Review:

This story was a very nice romance, and was a well written quick read.  The author built the story slowly but it ended too soon.  At the end  you are led to believe that this couple has a chance beyond their one night together.

The main characters took no responsibility toward their actions during the events that led up to the one BDSM scene and after the storm started. They blamed the weather for “making” them what they became just for that night. Personally I like my characters to take ownership of what they do.

Meet Vonna Harper and check out her “Carnal” series!

When you first started writing, did you have any idea you’d be writing BDSM/kinky books? Do you write in any other genre?

No, I didn’t. I started out writing category romance under my real name so that’s where my mindset was. Then life happened, including meeting Kate Douglas who introduced me to erotica. My first eroticas were sexed up category romances but I sensed I wanted to go deeper—to explore a personal fantasy of mine.

Are you actively involved in BDSM? If so how do you identify yourself? Dom(me)/sub? Top/bottom? Switch?

No.

At what point did you decide you wanted to write BDSM/kinky-themed erotica?

It was probably a combination of needing to challenge myself and that personal fantasy I mentioned earlier. Capture/prisoner/hostage elements are a turn-on for me. I tiptoed into that arena with my Ellora’s Cave story Forced. http://www.jasminejade.com/p-5333-forced.aspx That was years ago and it remains my best-selling book there. Oh, I thought, readers like the same thing I do.

Do you write BDSM/kink erotica based on what you find interesting or sexy, or do you write more for your audience?

A combination. Capture-kink is a turn-on for me and I’m discovering I’m not the only one. This might sound funny but these days I feel safe writing my particular kink where not that many years ago, I wouldn’t have known my stories would be embraced by so many readers.

Do you do any “hands-on” research when you’re writing BDSM/kinky themed erotica?

Sad to say, no. It all takes place in my unmanageable brain.

What is your favorite fetish? Why?

Review:

Human trafficking is a popular theme as of late.  I’m not sure if it is because it titillates or because it is a reflection upon our current society.  In Carnal Captive, we meet Shari Isle who is a struggling artist with c-cup boobs and a runner’s body.  She’s the one who is captured by Carnal Incorporated to be turned into a sex slave.  Bay Dennan is the rich man who wants a plaything to control.  His life consisted of being told what to do and someone else calling the shots.  Now he finally possesses the power to control someone else’s life.

This concept is good.  The non-consensual theme is a favourite of mine to read.  Ms. Harper creates some plausible scenarios in which a woman can be kidnapped.  The breakdown and training of Shari is detailed and graphic at times.  This story is less about the BDSM lifestyle and more about using sexual torture and beatings to force dehumanize of a woman.  The woman is nothing more than fuck meat.  She exists as three holes for her Master to poke.

I rated this book as four paddles for the Kinky factor because it definitely delivers in the sexual scenes.  The humiliation and sexual training Shari goes through is pretty hot.  The two male breakers, Reno and Damek, used different yet effective styles to force a desired behaviour from Shari.  The cage, whippings, nipple clamps and edging where all lovely.  A couple of them did come across as more clinical than carnal.  I would have enjoyed the bad cop and good cop routine from them.  While Reno was the one more controlled and Damek was the barely suppressed enraged monster, the distinction between the two was not enough.  Or perhaps I should state, not as much as what I think Ms. Harper was trying to show.

The genre of fantasy BDSM spans the range from the popular Anne Rice stories to the many amateur attempts found online. The first few paragraphs of this novella worried me a bit, as they seemed to be setting up cardboard characters that would go through predictable motions with visible strings controlling them. Having heard good things about Vonna Harper, I was a bit disappointed, especially by the continuity problems in the opening battle (Ms. Harper, please get a new editor, one who can count).

But the job of a reviewer is to read the whole story. And I’m glad I kept going, because once you get a few pages into the story it’s well worth it. Set in a pre-historic land where tribes battle for supremacy, the resident Otu are contesting the newly arrived Waban.

Sora, a warrior of the Otu, has been sent on a secret mission that is set up by the opening battle, and her choreographed defeat at the hands of the numerically superior Waban puts her in the hands of Hakan, the Waban war leader. Of course, this being a good BDSM story, both tribes keep and train sex slaves for the warriors, and the Waban consider themselves to be the best at conditioning women for constant service.

And this is what Sora expects, and was prepared for. What she isn’t prepared for is being claimed by Hakan personally. And in the days that she travels as his captive back to the Waban camp, she learns things about her sexual needs that shake her self control. And she comes to see that the control with Hakan has over his men is through courage and wisdom. Hakan is also very clever about waking up her denied lusts; as an experienced Dom, Uncle Folly found his methods not only plausible but quite skilled.
